KlipFolio 4 is Here

We're pleased to announce that KlipFolio 4, now with Mini-Sidebars, is
here. If you've been following the beta development, reading this blog
or helping us out in the forum, you've already seen what version 4
has in store. If not, today will be like christmas. There are many new features, however the ones that will stand out most
are KlipFolio's sidebar, topbar and bottombar layout capabilities. You
can even have multiple combinations, including the traditional
"floating" mode. Side, top and bottom bars can be set to reserve space,
sit on top of windows or even auto-hide. Myself, I have a sidebar on
the right edge of my desktop that is always visible and contains data
that I want to keep an eye on throughout the day, and I've placed a
number of other Klips inside of a topbar that I have auto-hidden. It's
very cool.

By now you're thinking, hey, that means that
KlipFolio now supports groups of Klips. You're right, you can very
easily arrange Klips into groups using KlipFolio 4. Each group has its
own toolbar, which can be used to move your group around.

Also
new is Liquid Klips, a physics-based positioning system that will make
arranging your Klips much quicker and easier. Now Klips will simply
move out of the way and reposition themselves to help you find a
perfect layout.

Then there are new types of Klips; System
Monitoring Klips that can access CPU, Memory, Wi-Fi, and Battery
status; Frame Klips that can display webcams and images in a fully
resizable region; and brand new Search Klips that will be new even to
our beta testers. Check out all the new Built for 4 Klips.

Berlin and Taipei

Our servers cranked through their biggest days yesterday and today -
yes, KlipFolio.com was down once! KlipFolio 4, beating all past
releases hands-down, is generating massive amounts of downloads. Not
only KlipFolio, but Klips, skins and lang files are all being
downloaded like we've never seen.

What's cool to see to is our
geographic distribution. Although there’s lots of action in
central Europe, it’s Berlin and Taipei who are battling it out
for top spot.

Given this, it's no wonder we've received so many
update to our language files today and yesterday. Many thanks to
Labbaipierre, Hakan ARIN, Yu Jianrong,Shinobi and Giacomo Margarito.
It's greatly appreciated.

Your feedback regarding KlipFolio's
new features has been great as well. All of it, the kudos, the "over
the top" type of praise, even the worries and threats ;-) They’re
all welcome. Really.

Keep it coming; let's make KlipFolio a better dashboard and sidebar than anything else out there.

Who are you guys anyhow?

Many of you participated in our KlipFolio user survey last year. A
massive undertaking, which asked all types of questions that helps us
get a better sense of who and where you are and how you're using
KlipFolio. We received over 3000 responses. Here are some of the
highlights!
The overwhelming majority of KlipFolio users are still male,
however, the age distribution has moved up a notch - over half of users
are now between 25 and 50. English continues to be the choice of
language with about half of our users, but European languages are
gaining to make up the bulk of the balance. Unchanged from 2004,
KlipFolio is being used every day, generally for personal interests and
almost three-quarters have between 5 and 20 Klips. Users still lean
towards being early adopters (but not quite as much as in 2004), using
the internet a few hours each day.

Web 2.0 Expo

Although it seems to us like we just got back from the east coast (WidgetsLive! and Fast Forward '07), we already have plans to head out again. Not that we're complaining ... if it's warmer than Ottawa, it's a welcome break.

This time, we're heading down to the Web 2.0 Expo
in San Francisco, April 15th to 18th. With many well thought out
sessions and a slew of interesting companies attending, it looks like
CMP and O'Reilly will be putting on a good event.

So make sure to let us know if you'll be there. It's always great to hook up with other KlipFolio users.

The Dark Horse and Other Happenings

First of all let me share with you two recent musings about KlipFolio.
NoHeat.com sticks it to the big boys in an article entitled Klipfolio takes on Microsoft and Google with a solid sidebar, and Simon Dickson
at BT Broadband Office calls us the "dark horse" among sidebars (a
title we take as quite the compliment) in this article called Enhance your Productivity with a Bit on the Side.

Give Me Some Sugar

We'll be attending the SugarCRM developer conference in two weeks,
San Jose, May 3-5. If you want to meet us, look for the guys with
KlipFolio shirts. Feel free to approach us and say 'hi' and let us know
your thoughts on KlipFolio.

Why are we attending? We use
SugarCRM internally and it rocks. But it's missing a good desktop
notification/alerting. Look for a new set of SugarCRM Klips from
Serence to bring this great Web application to the desktop.

Experiences from the Web 2.0 Expo

We just got back from the Web 2.0 show and wanted to give our
impressions of the show. Here's our impression of the conference in
four words: packed, infrastructure, APIs, and enterprise.

Packed

The
conference was packed, prompting Tim O'Reilly to comment that the Web
2.0 moniker has gone far beyond his expectations for attracting people.
In the first evening, so many people were in the exhibit hall it
wasn’t possible to move between the booths.

Infrastructure

There was an interesting talk by Jeff Bezos
on Amazon’s EC2 platform, which stands for their Elastic Compute
Cloud. Combined with their Simple Message Queue service and Simple
Storage (S3) storage, Amazon is positioning itself as the computing
platform for hosting scalable web applications. In other words, if you
want to build a Web 2.0 company, use Amazon’s infrastructure to
host your applications. Interestingly, SalesForce.com also has a
similar message with their Apex programming language. You can build you
SalesForce.com applications using Apex, run your application on
SalesForce.com server infrastructure, and sell your applications
through the ApexExchange exchange.

I predict we will see similar offerings from Google and Microsoft in the coming months.

In
looking at this infrastructure trend, I get the strong feeling there
will be a whole new segment of small, fast moving companies who are
very good at combining data from multiple sources using such platforms
to get to market quickly (and cheaply).

APIs

Speaking
of data, many of the interesting talks were around data, the rise of
APIs and their business models. I particularly liked John
Musser’s (programmableweb.com) presentation, accessible in PDF
from here.

Enterprise

There
was a lot more enterprise activity at the show than previous Web 2.0
conferences. There were the usual crowd of wikis and collaborative
software, but I noticed a lot more companies (RSS Bus, Dapper, Kapow,
Denodo, and Strike Iron) offering enterprise tools to create APIs from
your data sources.

Many data today is trapped in web-based
applications that don’t offer an API. Using tools from these
companies, you can create a REST or RSS API to extract data and mashup
with other applications.

KlipFolio can read data from any HTTP
request (REST or RSS) and alert you on the desktop when it changes. We
see this trend towards APIs and mashups creating more opportunities for
integrating KlipFolio into the enterprise.

We're #1 for downloaded RSS readers on download.com

While our focus is on Enterprise and Branded
versions of KlipFolio, it's cool to see our free consumer version of
KlipFolio is #1 for downloads on Download.com in the category of RSS
readers.

KlipFolio defeats Google Desktop, Yahoo! Widgets, and Windows Vista Sidebar to win personal dashboard gold

Web User, the UK's best selling internet magazine, has awarded KlipFolio gold in the Personal Dashboard category. KlipFolio beat out Yahoo! Widgets, Google Desktop, Microsoft Windows Vista Sidebar, Opera and Samurize to take the crown. Bam!

Not only that, but in their review
they gave KlipFolio a full 5 stars for every rating group (features,
number of widgets, ease of use, and appearance) resulting in an overall
score of 5 stars. Sweet!

Now we have to find a hard copy of the issue somewhere in Ottawa...

Thanks to Ralph Dunstable for the FYI!

AllAccess Desktop (built on KlipFolio)

A few days ago AllAccess went
live with AllAccess Desktop, a desktop alert application to notify its
members of updates to music charts. AllAccess Desktop was built using
KlipFolio and the KlipFolio Bunder.

You'll need an account from AllAccess (it's free) to download the
application. You'll also find they created a number of videos showing
how to setup and configure the application.

We think this is a
really cool example of what can be done with KlipFolio. And the best
part is that AllAccess did it all for free! Of course, they could do an
even better branded version with KlipFolio Branded, but this example shows it is possible to go pretty far with KlipFolio and KlipFolio Bundler.
